09/04/2025
The Deputy Governor of Achaia Regional Unit, Mr. Fokion Zaimis (Φωκίων Ζαΐμης), had the pleasure of addressing participants at the 17th Astronomical Conference of the Hellenic Astronomical Society, held this week in Patras, Greece.

In his welcoming speech, Mr. Zaimis took the opportunity to present the newly launched DarkSkyTour project, co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg Euro-MED Programme. He emphasized the Region of Western Greece’s commitment to sustainable tourism development, highlighting how dark sky tourism can create new economic opportunities while also contributing to the protection of biodiversity and the reduction of light pollution.

“The night sky is a shared heritage worth protecting,” Mr. Zaimis stated, noting that the Region of Western Greece, home to the largest telescope in the Balkans, is uniquely positioned to lead efforts in developing eco-friendly, star-based tourism models.

The event was an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of DarkSkyTour’s goals and reinforce the link between scientific research, regional development, and sustainable tourism innovation.

Stay tuned as we continue to bring the stars closer to communities across the Euro-MED region.
