The DarkSkyTour project aims to develop and mainstream Dark Sky Tourism in eight Euro-MED regions while encouraging the reduction of light pollution and the preservation of nocturnal biodiversity.
Focus

Dark Sky Tourism, or astrotourism, is an emerging form of nature-based, sustainable tourism that focuses on the observation of celestial phenomena in areas with low light pollution. Especially suited to rural and mountainous regions, it can be combined with hiking, gastronomy, wellness, and romantic experiences to offer unique, low-impact travel.
However, the increasing spread of artificial light at night poses a serious threat—disrupting ecosystems, endangering nocturnal biodiversity (such as birds, insects, and mammals), and even affecting human health.
The DarkSkyTour project addresses these challenges by developing transnational strategies, regional action plans, and capacity-building tools to promote dark-sky destinations, reduce light pollution, and raise public awareness about the importance of preserving our natural night skies.
